What is 5G?Benefits of 5G?

5G is the 5th generation mobile network for broadband cellular networks.

It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. 5G technology has a theoretical peak speed of 20 Gbps, while the peak speed of 4G is only 1 Gbps.

5G also promises lower latency, which can improve the performance of business applications as well as other digital experiences. Where 3G and 4G technologies have enabled us to browse the internet, use data-driven services, increased bandwidths for streaming on Spotify or YouTube and so much more, 5G services are expected to revolutionize our lives. by enabling services that rely on advanced technologies like AR and VR, alongside cloud-based gaming services like Google Stadia, NVidia GeForce Now and much more.

It is expected to be used in HD cameras that help improve safety and traffic management, smart grid control, and smart retail too.

Previous Generations:

First generation – 1G

The 1980s: 1G delivered analog voice.

Second generation – 2G

In the early 1990s: 2G introduced digital voice (e.g. CDMA- Code Division Multiple Access).

Third generation – 3G

Early 2000s: 3G brought mobile data (e.g. CDMA2000).

Fourth generation – 4G LTE

2010s: 4G LTE ushered in the era of mobile broadband.

5G will help Edge computing Grow:

The 5G network’s speed should be 10 times faster than what the 4G network allows. That improvement opens possibilities for far-away sensors to instantly give updates about the connected devices.

That increase in real-time processing will require new equipment with enhanced capabilities. It’ll also raise the demand for edge computing since that method processes data at the borders of a network rather than transferring the data a significant distance first.

In healthcare, 5G technology and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity will enable patients to be monitored via connected devices that constantly deliver data on key health indicators, such as heart rate and blood pressure.

In the auto industry, 5G combined with ML-driven algorithms will provide information on traffic, accidents, and more; vehicles will be able to share information with other vehicles and entities on roadways, such as traffic lights.

How does 5G works?

5G architectures will be software-defined platforms, in which networking functionality is managed through software rather than hardware.5G is also OFDM-based (Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) and will operate based on the same mobile networking principles.

5G technology achieves its expected high efficiency using advanced modulation techniques and network terminologies like:

Carrier Aggregation: Carrier aggregation is a technique used in LTE advanced to improve system efficiency. In carrier aggregation, two or more carrier signals are aggregated to support wider bandwidth which allows even up to 100 MHz.

Millimeter waves: Millimeter waves are one of the efficient solutions to solve data rate. It has higher bandwidth to simultaneously transmit and receive data from base station and UE (handset). Future 5G deployments will make use of 5G-NR spectrum capable of gigabit/second data transfer.

Small Cell Concept: To increase network efficiency, the cell is subdivided into micro and Pico cells. Spectrum reusability allows for adding more users in a small geographical area and handling networks more efficiently.

MIMO Concept:

MIMO is a transmission technology with the usage of multiple antennas for transmission and reception.

Cloud – Radio Network Access:

C-RAN is a network technology used for effective communication with centralized information processing carried out remotely within the cloud system. The signal will be processed at a remote location and the base stations will be connected with the most efficient fiber-optic connections.

It gives a lot of advantages in system implementation, and maintenance and is highly efficient.
